Despite some reported personal turmoil this week, Johnny Depp can rest easy that America’s still got his back. The Pirates of the Caribbean star has topped Harris Interactive’s “Favorite Movie Star” poll for a second year in a row.
There were plenty of surprises on the list, like how the reclusive Depp beat out four of Hollywood’s most charismatic A-listers and a Westerns legend, the complete absence of Tinseltown’s ultimate power couple, and the demographic breakdown of Depp’s fan base that shows his supporters are truly a silent majority. See who Depp bested for the title and which Oscar-winning actresses dropped off the list entirely after the jump.
Clint Eastwood — a favorite of Southerners and men… and, presumably, Southern men — tied for second place with Denzel Washington. Demographically speaking,

Travelling Light, Lyttelton, NT, London
Nicholas Wright is one of my favourite dramatists. I love the way that he can take vastly heterogeneous subject matter - from Melanie Klein to Vincent Van Gogh, from James Mossman to Terence Rattigan and Nijinsky -- and excavate acutely fresh and sharply researched plays that nonetheless have very distinctive finger marks on them. This reminds me a little of the relationship between Simon Russell Beale and his roles. It is furthermore wonderful that, at seventy one, Wright seems to be more productive than ever. So how to account for the mis-step that is his latest play, Travelling Light, premiered now at the Lyttelton in a nothing-if-not-charming production by Nicholas Hytner.
The best thing about the show, in my opinion, is the brilliantly punning title which makes me shiver with delight each time I ponder it. It beautifully blends the idea of emigration and of cinematography, bringing out the projection-room shimmer in the phrase.

Golden Globes 2012: Let the red carpet arrivals begin!
Ricky Gervais who? No matter the buzz, we'll get to him later — because first there's the Golden Globes' show before the show Sunday, outside the Beverly Hilton, on a red carpet one young fan described as the "Ladies' Super Bowl."At least one guy — George Clooney — was considering the score before the event even kicked off. "I predict I will not win four, so I will be a pretty big loser tonight," was the red carpet sentiment from Clooney, who is nominated for lead drama actor for “The Descendants" and screenplay and director for “Ides of March," both of which are up for best drama picture.
TV personalities warmed up the carpet in the calm
before the big-name storm (with luck, not a real storm, though the weather was balky come game time).
Streep poised to win Globes for starring role as Thatcher
The Golden Globes are considered the most reliable pointer to Oscar winners - apart from this column.
And that's great news for Meryl Streep, the hot favourite to win a Best Actress Globe for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady'.
Streep's physical resemblance to Thatcher is so convincing that, as soon as they saw the film, those Chilean miners returned to work.
At odds of 1-3 with Hills, Streep is pretty much unbackable, just as Thatcher was for most of her time in power. Her years as Prime Minster brought misery and despair to millions - something Streep managed in two hours with 'Mamma Mia'.
In preparing diligently for the role, Streep watched videos of Thatcher, spoke to the former PM's colleagues, and laid waste to Liverpool.
