Manchester United v Ajax – as it happened

Manchester United v Ajax – as it happened
Manchester United progressed to the next round despite suffering for long periods during their second-leg defeat.
Full-time: United crawl through to the last 16 of the Europa league. This was a highly entertaining game in which both sides were committed to attack. United had the better finishers, but Ajax had the more coherent creators and outplayed the hosts for long periods in the second half. Ultimately, however, Ajax's inability to convert their chances - which was partially down to a couple of fine saves from De Gea - cost the Dutch. An all-Manchester Europa League final is still on. United will have to beat Athletic Bilbao in the next round.

90+ 1min: Ajax dawdle over a throw-in, oddly. "Ajax will be really turning up the heat now," suggests Wiliam Peake. "Creating a Dutch oven, so to speak." Well, it is sqeaky bum time.

90 min: Anti-Fergie time: the fourth official says there will be only two more minutes.

89 min: Ajax are really going for it now, as you'd expect. But they'll need better crosses than the one Ozbiliz jsut produced: he launched it straight out of play as team-mates lined up in the box.

88 min: Evans booked for time-wasting. That it has come to this.

Euro 2012  Paper Round Capello ready to quit now
There are a few different sub-plots running through the papers with the Mirror's take being the most dramatic as their back page screams: "Capello's ready to quit" with the rather cheeky addition of "(well, no one's going to stop you, Fabio)."

In an exclusive written by John Cross, the paper claims: "Capello is so frustrated with the Football Association over the John Terry fiasco that he could go even before the European Championship Finals.

Southampton 0 Leicester City 2: match report

Read a full match report of the Championship game between Southampton and Leicester City at St Mary's Stadium on Monday Jan 23 2012.
The songs being sung about David Nugent by the Southampton fans are unprintable here.
Let us just say that they alluded to what the former Portsmouth striker might like to do in his spare time.
Southampton 0 Leicester City 2: match report
Nugent is not one to shirk a confrontation, and in glee he turned to face his assailants, raising both arms as a conductor might cajole an orchestra.

Arsenal's Andrey Arshavin is a cut-price £6million January target for Lazio.

Arsenal's Andrey Arshavin is a cut-price £6million January target for Lazio.
The Italian giants are ready to move in and present the Gunners with a dilemma over whether they should cut their losses and sell Arshavin, who has 18 months left on his contract.

The Mirror revealed last month that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger could be ready to listen to offers, although he will not want to leave himself short of cover.

Arshavin, a £12m signing three years ago, is out of contract in the summer of 2013 and his value will diminish this summer - Wenger has already hinted that Arsenal will not offer him a new deal.

Pakistan v England: We must not take moral high ground, warns Strauss

  • Captain cautions about spot-fixing in England
  • 'If there's been one incident there's a fair chance of others'
Andrew Strauss has warned English cricket against taking the moral high ground over spot-fixing on the eve of the first Test against Pakistan.

This is the teams' first meeting since 2010, when they played out an acrimonious one-day series after the spot-fixing scandal emerged during the fourth and final Test at Lord's, so Strauss and several other England players have been stressing the need to "move on" from that controversy.

Mourinho relief as Real Madrid edge out spirited Mallorc

Jose Mourinho praised Real Mallorca after his Real Madrid side were forced to dig deep for the three points, which helps keep them clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga, at the Iberostar Stadium on Saturday .

Real went behind to Tomer Hemed's first-half header before goals from substitute Gonzalo Higuain and Jose Callejon turned the game around. "They were very focused and all their men played together waiting for a counter-attack," Mourinho said. "They had a fantastic first half. Sometimes you have to give credit to your opponent.
"We had to take risks in the second half to win, and note the specified changes we would have to make if we scored again. I replaced Marcelo because I wanted to use three defenders against an opponent with two wingers and a centre-forward. Many times one must replace players for tactical reasons, not because they played badly."

Liga - Madrid go eight clear with Mallorca win

Real Madrid opened up an eight-point lead at the top of La Liga after a second-half comeback saw them defeat Real Mallorca 2-1 at Iberostar Stadium.

Looking to extend their winning streak away from home to seven matches and put rivals Barcelona under further pressure, Madrid were awful in the first half in Mallorca, conceding a goal scored by Tomer Hemed and struggling badly in the final third until Sergio Ramos struck the post just before the break.

Jose Mourinho displayed characteristic initiative in the second period when quickly introducing three substitutes and his bravery was rewarded as Madrid responded, Gonzalo Higuain scoring with a fortunate finish, Cristiano Ronaldo smacking the bar and then Jose Mario Callejon scoring a fine winner.
